Ormiston South Parade celebrates a prestigious award!

Ormiston South Parade Academy (OSPA) are very excited to announce that they have achieved the Gold Rights Respecting Schools Award. The award proves that they have embedded the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child into teaching, learning and the whole school ethos. Following a full day assessment in December they have received their official report from UNICEF confirming that they have achieved ‘Gold: Rights Respecting’. The assessor was incredibly impressed with the pupils’ rights respecting learning and they were described as ‘true champions of Rights!’ The staff and pupils at OSPA are incredibly proud of the award, especially as they are the first school in North East Lincolnshire to receive it!

West Marsh Community Centre’s Christmas Fayre

West Marsh Community Centre held their annual Christmas Fayre on 7th December.

Volunteer and Manager of West Marsh Community Centre Neil Barber amongst several other volunteers have been working on the community Centre’s grotto since August.

Neil explained: ‘I do all of this for the kids, if the kids get a good Christmas then it is worth it for us, it’s about making memories and bringing families together‘.

As well as Santa’s Grotto there were several other rooms in the Community Centre decorated for Christmas, including a place to write a letter to Santa for the children before they met him in his grotto.

The fayre had some Christmas themed stalls from local businesses and organisations such as Grimsby in Bloom which included homemade bird boxes, along with local residents setting up stalls.

The event will be centred on community led change, and we want to hear all about community ideas and projects which could benefit local children and families.

We are serving a buffet and there will be activities for both parents and children.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Raising Aspiration- ‘So Can You’

You might have seen some pictures on bus stops of local young people who have gone into great jobs in the Grimsby area. These are part of a campaign to increase the number of young people who think about going to university when deciding on their future and to put them ‘in the picture’ about local opportunities. The team who developed the campaign spoke to lots of young people about why they make the decisions they do and found that lots of young people don’t believe that they could do it- so the campaign was called ‘So Can you’.

The campaign has also been on social media and some of the graduates have been into local schools like John Whitgift to give assemblies to students in years 10 and 11.

A brilliant new Higher Education section has also been developed on the Lincs2 website so local young people can find out much more about local opportunities and study. Search Lincs2HE.

A newsletter, offering advice on the things that many parents need when it comes to careers and HE, has also been sent out. The Learning Shop in Osborne Street in the town centre are happy to support parents with applications, advice about finance etc. should they need it. At a session in the town centre over 200 young people and parents received information about the website and HE and career opportunities.

To hear more about opportunities and activities for young people follow IcanNEL on Facebook or Twitter.

For more about local careers visit the Lincs2 website or follow Lincs2NEL on Twitter and Facebook.
